SW Radio Africa news - The Independent Voice of Zimbabwe

Lovemore Sekeramayi, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chief elections officer, died of suspected heart failure in his hotel room in Lesotho on Wednesday.

Sekeramayi, 67, was attending a meeting of chief elections officers for electoral management bodies from the SADC region. A former member of the Central Intelligence Organisation, the ZEC boss presided over the highly disputed March 2008 elections and the controversial 2013 poll.

He was seconded to ZEC from the CIO in 2007 until the time of his death. ZEC chairperson Justice Rita Makarau in a statement on Wednesday expressed her ‘heartfelt condolences’ to Sekeramayi’s wife and his family.

Ordinary Zimbabweans, still seething from last year’s ‘rigged’ election results, took to social media accusing Sekeramayi of taking his secrets with him to his grave.

Sekeramayi died a day after ZEC filed an application with the ConCourt opposing an application lodged by constitutional lawyer Justice Alfred Mavedzenge to release the voters roll.

Last month Mavedzenge approached the High court demanding that ZEC release the electronic copy of the national voters roll. Since ZEC has opposed his application, a full hearing is expected to be heard at the ConCourt, with both parties submitting heads of arguments.
