SW Radio Africa news - The Independent Voice of Zimbabwe

The MDC-T faction led by Morgan Tsvangirai has said there is no mediation taking place between itself and the Tendai Biti-led Renewal Team.

The Tsvangirai faction said it was concerned about the ‘false narrative’ which said national executive member Sekai Holland was mediating between the two.

A statement said Holland is the Chairperson of the party’s Guardians Council and has not been mandated to re-engage ‘rebels’ because ‘there is no reason’ to re-engage with people who have ‘openly confessed to be working with ZANU PF and the state security agents.’

These comments come after the Renewal Team charged Tsvangirai and summoned him to appear before a disciplinary hearing to face 17 counts of violating the party’s constitution. Among other charges, Tsvangirai is accused of entering the erstwhile Government of National Unity without consultation and of ‘clandestinely’ entering negotiations to purchase a house in Mount Pleasant.

Also summoned was MDC-T Chairman Lovemore Moyo who faces four counts, which include failure to conduct free and fair primary elections ahead of last’s year national polls.

But the Tsvangirai faction said the charging and summoning of the two leaders was ‘not consistent with any form of mediation either taking place or about to take place.’ MDC-T spokesman, Douglas Mwonzora said the Renewal Team has no mandate to summon Tsvangirai because it was already a different stand alone political party.

The MDC-T split into two factions in February after Secretary General Tendai Biti led an attempt to ‘renew’ the party leadership by suspending Tsvangirai. Since then both factions have been trading accusations against each other.
