SW Radio Africa news - The Independent Voice of Zimbabwe

This is one week that ZANU PF’s Joice Mujuru will want to quickly forget after being caught up in yet another spot of bother for the second time. Over the weekend, Mujuru ruffled feathers when she reportedly sought out a private media reporter during a memorial service and insinuated that Mugabe could soon “be called by God”. A rival ZANU PF faction said this was as good as saying she wished President Robert Mugabe dead. Now it has since emerged that Mujuru has caused an upset of a different kind after feeding the multitudes who attended Mugabe’s Thursday 7th inauguration ceremony, with contaminated chicken. The event was held at the 60,000-seater National Sports Stadium, with more than 30 buses hired to ferry supporters to the gig where free T-Shirts, fizzy drinks and 80,000 portions of chickens were distributed to the crowds. Reports say hungry party supporters thronged food delivery trucks, with mounted police controlling the queues, well before the ceremony ended. Mujuru is said to have supplied 50,000 packs of the mainly rotten chickens through her company, Chicken Slice – although the company disputes the figure. But by Thursday night, many of these people were in agony after consuming what turned out to be not very fresh chicken, according to online newspaper the ZimEye. “A number of people who fed on the massively and hurriedly produced chicken were on Thursday night complaining of stomach aches.“Although at the time of writing there were no reported cases of hospitalised victims, four party cadres spoke saying they were considering going to Parirenyatwa general hospital,” the ZimEye reported Friday. It is unclear whether Mugabe ate any of the dodgy chicken at what has been dubbed his last supper. Whatever the case might be, judging by the exaggerated indignation in the wake of Mujuru’s Beatrice remarks – amid reports that a probe has been launched – it is possible that her rivals will be sniffing around for possible foul play.
