At least 20 families in Goromonzi district in Mashonaland West have been evicted from their homes and are now homeless. The stranded farm workers have put up plastic shacks on the side of the road. The evictions were spearheaded by a ZANU PF loyalist named as Mashingaidze, just when the presidential results were being announced. With no toilets or source of water, life has become miserable for them. The farm workers, most of whom are aliens of Malawian and Mozambican origin, have nowhere to go. Amongst them is a six day old baby girl. It is alleged the MDC-T picked up a substantial number of votes at a polling station nearby, so Mashingaidze accused the farm workers of being MDC -T loyalists. SW Radio Africa is reliably informed he told them to leave as he would not associate with ‘puppets of the West.’ When our correspondent visited the farm this week the situation was calm but tense. The workers had just been issued with yet another threat, saying they should all move away from the area. Almost everyone on the roadside was clad in ZANU PF regalia, in the hope that this would protect them. Youths were wearing ZANU PF caps and women were wrapped in ZANU PF cloths. The spokesperson of the group said the problem started in 2008 when they were evicted from Mara Farm, now owned by a Mr Dube. They were evicted after complaining that they were not being paid, although Dube said he was evicting them because they were MDC-T supporters. This forced more than 30 families to settle on Mashingaidze farm, which is just across the road, as they had nowhere else to go.↧
