SW Radio Africa news - The Independent Voice of Zimbabwe

Jonathan Moyo’s attempt to challenge his loss in Tsholotsho North during last week’s vote has been put on hold, with the winning MDC-T candidate fighting against a recount. Moyo had petitioned the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and called for a recount of the votes, after losing to Rosemary Sipepa-Nkomo. ZEC agreed that this would happen, and the recount was expected to go ahead Wednesday. But Sipepa-Nkomo on Tuesday filed a court application for a review of the decision and that matter was set to be heard Thursday, putting the recount on hold. At the time of writing it was not known what the outcome of this hearing had been. ZEC was also forced this week into reversing its decision to have a recount in Mudzi South, where the losing ZANU PF candidate was challenging the win by lawyer Jonathan Samukange, standing as an independent. Samukange went to court and argued that recount was illegal, because it would be a violation of the Electoral Act, which forbids ‘tampering’ with ballot papers without a court order.
